2200 Strand Wm. Moody Building
Here's some good news, though: this iconic Galveston building known formally as the William Moody building but locally as "Col. Bubby's" after the military surplus store, and its owner, that was there for decades.  It has been under renovation for about a year now, and the current owners are hard at work restoring her to her former glory - and at no small cost, either.
1370 Avenue H
A great example of a very large house that's so big that it might be difficult to find a loving owner for it.  Probably better suited for multifamily, if the local historic zoning ordinance allowed...
2818 Avenue H
This is one of those properties that fellow I mentioned owns but won't do anything with.  My understanding is the historical significance of this one is known and well-documented; unfortunately, there's no way to make the current owner sell it.  Luckily, I hear the local historical foundation is interested in acquiring it.
2815 Avenue H
Such great potential!

Unlike some of Galveston's large, almost palatial homes, this house is a perfect size for a single family.  I suspect that the reason a few of the very large homes on the island are still vacant is because they're difficult to sell - hardly anyone needs that much room anymore.  Some are much better suited for renovation into multifamily, but that is not allowed by ordinance in historic districts...  I understand the concerns with that (parking, noise, etc), but I do wonder if that is holding back renovation of some of these projects.
2763 Winnie
Several of these houses are owned by the same fellow, who apparently has no interest in doing anything with them.

My guess is he wants to keep the land for redevelopment, but that doesn't mean he can't at least sell and relocate the houses.  People like that truly annoy me...
DAL Designs is proud to announce the launch (pun intended) of its newest venture, DAL Visions.  Using commercially available UAVs and video editing software, DAL Visions will provide high-quality aerial video for everything from special events such as Victoria Independent School District's Fishing with Friends and weddings to pipeline and utility line inspections.  The sky is the limit (again with the puns) in the developing field of commercial UAV use!

Due to current FAA regulations, DAL Visions is currently offering its services free of charge to select businesses and charities. However, within the next six months we hope to have our FAA Certificate of Waiver or Authorization and Section 333 exemption.  Those Federal permissions will allow DAL Visions to conduct limited UAV photography for profit.

Until then, we've uploaded a few sample videos. Enjoy!

  • Listening to: Mother nature after a rainstorm
  • Reading: FAA Section 333 regulations
  • Watching: BBC Restoration Home
  • Drinking: Sweet tea

I'm a 40 year old graduate of Texas A&M University's Master of Urban Planning program, with emphasis on ecological design and historic preservation. Currently I work for a GIS consulting firm in Houston, Texas. While this isn't at all related to historic preservation, I do travel all over the state and get to photograph a lot of historic buildings.

I am formally trained as an architectural and engineering draftsman, and I have seven years experience as an architectural designer. I also have ten years experience as an engineering draftsman. Aside from that, I've been a soldier, a waiter, a surveyor, a GIS technician, and a grocery store cashier.
